“Welcome, welcome, everyone.” A woman called the group to order, with the gravelly voice of the lifelong smoker. Carson inched his way through the crowd and craned his neck to try to spot Becca through the twilight. “I’m Yolanda Willits, president of the Southwest Ghost Hunters Association, and I’m pleased you have all joined us on this, our maiden voyage into the world of the paranormal.”

The group politely clapped. Carson wove his way around several men wearing cowboy hats to get to the other side of the group. It was getting darker now. The sun had been down for forty-five minutes. Shouldn’t Becca be here by now?

“Oh, look-a there. It’s old Carson.” Up walked Shep Leeds. He immediately threw an arm around Becca’s shoulders. Carson took a step back. Dang it. He didn’t mean to do that. He wanted to kick old Shep Leeds to the curb.

“Glad you could join us.” Shep didn’t look glad. Then he looked down at Becca, and his face softened.

A dragon blew fire in Carson’s chest. His eyes flickered to Becca’s face, and he tried to read her reaction there, but he couldn’t— other than the fact she didn’t seem to mind Shep’s attention nearly as much as she had before.

Yolanda went on. “We ask that the group stay together tonight— and not just to hear the fascinating history of the dearly departed citizens of our fair city.” She laughed a scraping chuckle. “This is for the safety of the members of this party. It’s not just any night, folks. It’s a new moon, the darkest night possible. And with this cloud cover from the monsoon, we’ve got a serious level of night going on. Perfect for a manifestation.” From the crowd rose a few titters of nervous laughter and some ghostly howls, followed by other laughs.

Carson didn’t care whether he or any of the other patrons saw a ghost tonight. He was only here for something really tangible. And she stood within touching distance. It was killing him by inches.

“Oh, good. Here’s the man of the hour. Shep Leeds, everybody.” Yolanda Willits led the group in applause. “Shep has done a tremendous amount of research to put this tour together. His undying— get it? undying?— love for this town is a real example and boon for us all.” She went on praising the hulk for another couple of minutes, but Carson didn’t hear a word more. Shep had left Becca’s side. She was open.

In two seconds, Carson was beside her. “Scared yet?”

She jumped. “Not until you startled me.”

“You look nervous.” He leaned in closer, and he could smell some kind of strawberry scent. “Do I make you nervous?” he whispered.

“You’re wicked. Wicked people always make me nervous.”

Carson stood aback. “So I’m wicked now? What makes me wicked? Is it my devilish good looks?”

“Shh. I’m trying to hear the tour. It’s about to start.”

Sure enough, Yolanda held aloft a torch as she spoke into a microphone, and Shep, her assistant, held a small speaker playing
